7 Questions with Emily Liebert
Summer is here. That means warmer temperatures, scorching sun, and another spicy thriller from perennial favorite, Emily Liebert.
Liebert’s always-twisty novels are perfect for reading poolside while sipping a cocktail — or, as I read this one, on your back porch with a never-ending glass of boxed wine.
Her newest novel, Perfectly Famous hits shelves tomorrow. Before you dive in, get to know Liebert a little better by checking out her responses to our 7 questions.
1. What's your favorite drink?
I have two, depending on the time of day. Bloody Mary Spicy with three olives and Champagne.
2. Where and when do you write?
In my home office, typically for four hours a day, between 8:30am and 3:30pm
3. What does your prewriting process look like?
I always write an outline, which I often change as I write.
With Perfectly Famous, I wrote a 30-page outline in order to make sure the plot moved fluidly and the twists occurred at the right time. The ONLY thing I changed was the ending, and I did so as I was writing the last line.
4. What's up next?
Book #8!
It’s crazy to think about that.
I’m already writing it. Also, my last novel, Pretty Revenge, was optioned for a TV series, and they just hired the writers, so I’m very involved in that as well.
5. In this novel we see two very different versions of a teenage girl. We have Chloe, who, much to her mother’s chagrin, is negatively asserting her independence. Conversely we see Amanda, Chloe’s former friend, who is relatively consistent in adhering to the rules. Which of these two teens were you most like as an adolescent?
Amanda! Without a doubt.
I was a rule follower. If I spoke to my mother the way Chloe speaks to Bree, I might not have lived to tell about it.
6. Throughout this book, the newly divorced Bree goes on a number of dates with two very different men. Despite the fact that I generally hate dating, some of the booze- and food-rich outings did seem quite enjoyable. What would your idea of a perfect date be?
Booze and rich food!
Little known fact about me—I don’t go to movies or even watch them at home. I simply can’t shut my mouth for that long. I talk through the whole thing.
Also, I’m a major foodie. The restaurants featured in the book are my favorite local spots.
7. I was consistently amazed by how healthy the relationship between Bree and her recently ex-husband Jeremy was. At times, Bree even seemed to passively rethink her decision to end their marriage. Do you think her choice to divorce him was the correct one?
I do.
I’m a firm believer that divorce does not have to breed animosity. Sometimes people just grow apart and envision different things for themselves in the future, and there’s nothing wrong with that.
You only live once. Why not be happy?
